History Happened West of the Mississippi

When I was a kid growing up and going to school in Maryland I felt really sorry for people who lived west of the Mississippi because absolutely no history happened where they lived. Ever. We touched on westward migration and a little bit on Native Americans (generally focused on the east coast ones, though), but mostly we never got much past the Civil War, with a skip forward to the World Wars, in social studies.

Now we live in Texas which has a whole lot of years of history completely unrelated to British colonization and our history curriculum, being classically based, includes early modern history from around the world. Of course as as I have gotten older I’ve realized a whole lot of history was going on inland from the east coast. I’m glad my kids realize this, too.
